Abstract

Primary aldosteronism (PA), once considered a rare secondary cause of resistant hypertension and hypokalemia, is now recognized as a highly prevalent and frequently underdiagnosed syndrome affecting patients across the full spectrum of blood pressure, most without hypokalemia. Despite the availability of effective targeted therapies, screening rates remain low, and most at-risk individuals are never tested. Barriers include limited awareness and perceived complexity of the diagnostic process. Recent consensus guidelines from the American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology and the Endocrine Society seek to simplify screening and improve case detection.

Objectives for this webinar:

  1. Demonstrate that PA is common and can be found in patients across the entire spectrum of hypertension.
  2. Show that PA leads disproportionally higher rates of cardiovascular and kidney disease, and that benefits of treatment go beyond blood pressure control.
  3. Recognize that the vast majority of PA cases currently go undetected due to low rates of screening
  4. Review updates from recently revised Endocrine Society and American Heart Association consensus guidelines regarding PA
  5. Outline a pragmatic strategy for screening and initial management of PA
