New research published in Nature Communications suggests that GLP-1 medications, such as Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro, may help protect and restore the heart after a heart attack by restoring blood flow to small vessels that may otherwise remain blocked.
The study reached this conclusion by exploring the biological processes by which GLP-1 medications affect the heart. Previous research has shown that taking GLP-1 medications lowers the risk of having major heart problems separately from the drugs’ weight loss effects. Previous research has also shown that small coronary capillaries tighten and can become blocked when the heart is deprived of oxygen-rich blood, such as before, during, or after a heart attack. If these vessels remain blocked after a heart attack, which occurs in nearly half of heart attack patients, certain parts of the heart tissue are deprived of blood flow. This study explored whether GLP-1 medications could help unblock these small vessels, potentially improving recovery after a heart attack occurs.
The results showed that taking GLP-1 medications improves blood flow after a heart attack. This happens because GLP-1 medications activate potassium channels that help relax cells called pericytes that are responsible for restricting the blood flow in coronary capillaries. With these blood vessels unblocked, the heart is more able to effectively recover after a heart attack, and additional damage is less likely to occur.
The authors of the study noted that GLP-1 medications are becoming increasingly popular for a wide range of clinical applications, including treatment of type 2 diabetes, kidney disease, and obesity. The results of this study suggest that GLP-1s may also be useful for helping the heart to repair and recover after a heart attack. Blockages in small vessels after a heart attack can pose a serious and potentially life-threatening risk of patients, and GLP-1 medications may provide a surprising and simple solution to address this condition.
