What connection does cannabis legalization have with crime rates? This is what a recent study published in Economic Modelling hopes to address as a team of researchers from the US and Taiwan investigated the relationship between how cannabis legalization impacts crime rates across the United States. This study has the potential to help scientists, legislators, and the public better understand the benefits of cannabis legalization and its socioeconomic impacts.
For the study, the researchers used a series of analytical models to examine the social impacts of recreational and medical cannabis, with a specific focus on how it impacts criminal activity. The study was conducted across all 50 states with the goal of establishing trends between cannabis legalization and crime. In the end, the researchers found that crime rates gradually declined after cannabis legalization, followed by rapid decline a few years later. However, they emphasize caution with using reduced crime with cannabis legalization since the impacts aren’t immediate.
The study notes, ““Overall, the findings indicate that estimated crime effects are highly sensitive to identification assumptions and do not provide robust evidence of an increase in property crime following legalization, underscoring the importance of careful empirical design in policy evaluation.”
This study comes as cannabis legalization continues increasing across the country. As of March 2026, 24 states have legalized both recreational and medical cannabis use while 16 states have legalized medical use but not recreational use. Only seven states have legalized cannabidiol (CBD) or low-THC only use, while 3 states still have cannabis listed as fully illegal. Therefore, studies like this can provide insight into the socioeconomic benefits of cannabis legalization, thus potentially properly informing legislators of its legalization benefits.
What new insight into cannabis legalization and crime rates will researchers make in the coming years and decades? Only time will tell, and this is why we science!
As always, keep doing science & keep looking up!
